Mesothelioma Symptoms Explained

Mesothelioma is a relatively rare cancer caused by asbestos exposure. It attacks the membranes that surround the lungs, heart or abdomen.

The only recognized cause of mesothelioma is exposure to asbestos, though other factors such as smoking can make the disease more or less likely in some individuals. In most cases, mesothelioma symptoms will not appear in an individual exposed to asbestos until many years after the exposure has occurred.

Asbestos exposure is the leading cause of the rare cancer known as mesothelioma (the most common form of this cancer is pleural mesothelioma). Asbestos related lung diseases and cancer are not easily diagnosed and unfortunately, are not evident in the body until many years after exposure. Since mesothelioma and other lung related diseases are triggered in later stages of life, veterans who were involved in the military should also check that they were not exposed to asbestos.

The development of mesothelioma is directly related to asbestos exposure. Because mesothelioma can take years to develop, protecting small children from asbestos is vital.
